Asbestos Specialists: Rules & Regulations

In the state of New York, asbestos removal specialists must receive training and apply for a certification in order to legally work with asbestos. Training prepares specialists for handling, evaluating, sampling and removing asbestos according to health, safety and environmental regulations. Here is an overview of how to become certified specialist.

Complete Your Training

Asbestos removal specialists must fulfill a certain set of training requirements depending on the type of work that they perform. There are nine different training programs established by the state such as operation and maintenance, asbestos handler, contractor, inspector and project monitor. Training courses must be accredited by the New York State Department of Health to be considered valid.

Apply for Your Certificate

Once training is complete, asbestos removal specialists must apply for a state certification, which is issued through the New York State Department of Labor Asbestos Licensing and Certification Unit. The Licensing and Certification Unit can issue an Asbestos Certificate of Competence and Asbestos Handling License depending on the requirements that are met.

Transfer Your Training and Certification From Another State

Specialists who receive training in another state must first submit an Asbestos Safety Training Equivalency/Reciprocity Application. Upon acceptance, they must also take a refresher course specially related to the state of New York.

Every year, asbestos removal specialists must complete a refresher training course accredited by the New York State Department of Health. The course must be related to the work that they do and fall under one of the nine asbestos-related disciplines. A one-year grace period is provided to complete the course; however, specialists must repeat the entire training and certification process if the grace period lapses.

In order to work safely and handle and dispose of asbestos in environmentally sustainable ways, asbestos removal specialists must be thoroughly trained and renew their certification annually. Check with your local training provider to determine which of the nine disciplines is most appropriate for you.
